What makes subtitles dynamic?

The visible state follows the speech, not just the cue.

Dynamic subtitles do more than replace one complete caption cue with the next. They use timing inside the cue so the visual treatment can follow the current word. A word may change colour, grow, fill a background or appear on its own while the sentence is spoken. That moving active state is what makes dynamic captions feel connected to the voice instead of sitting above it.

The transcript still matters. Motion cannot repair a wrong word, a late cue or an awkward line break. Generate the text, review uncertain words and timing, then choose how strongly the caption should react. SubtitleGenerator keeps those jobs in one browser editor, so the dynamic style is applied to the same captions you correct rather than to a disconnected copy.

From speech timing to visible motion

1. Time the words

A normal cue has a start and end. A dynamic subtitle also needs word-level timing so the renderer knows which word is active at each moment. SubtitleGenerator uses those timed words for the preview and burned-in video render.

2. Choose the active state

The preset decides what changes. Word pulse changes colour and scale inside a stable phrase. One-word focus replaces the phrase with the current word. Karaoke fill keeps the line and paints a block behind the word being spoken.

3. Render every frame

The browser renderer combines the current time, word timing, typography, safe area and motion rule for each frame. The live comparison above uses that same render model; it is not a decorative mock-up or a second editor.

Entry or motion

Caption animation

Animation describes how text enters, leaves or moves. It can happen at phrase or word level, but animation-template searches lead to a different task, so they are not merged into this page.

A dynamic subtitle can include animation, but the terms are not interchangeable. The practical test is whether the visual state follows word timing. A phrase that fades in once is animated; a phrase whose active word advances with the speaker is dynamic. Talking-head videos and explainers

Active-word emphasis can keep the viewer’s eye close to the point being spoken. Use it selectively: a stable phrase is often easier to read when the explanation is dense.

Shorts and vertical clips

Large words and clear progress can support a fast hook on a small screen. Keep captions inside the safe area so platform controls do not cover the active word.

How to make dynamic subtitles in the browser

1. Pick a treatment

Use the timing bench to compare a phrase-level view, a one-word view and a karaoke fill. Choose the one that matches the pace and amount of text in your video.

2. Choose your local video

Open the browser editor with your selected treatment, then choose a video from your device. The original file stays in your browser; this feature page itself never receives or transcribes it.

3. Generate and review the words

Create the transcript, fix uncertain words and check cue timing in the editor. Dynamic captions make timing errors more visible, so review the active word against the voice before styling becomes the final pass.

4. Preview and export

Play the edited section, check the caption safe area in the target aspect ratio and export the result you need. Use burned-in video when the exact word-by-word look must remain part of the picture.

What each export keeps

Choose the output by what needs to survive after export.

Burned-in video keeps the visible typography, colour, placement, highlighting and supported motion because the browser draws them into the video frames. SRT and VTT keep subtitle text and cue timing, but they do not carry this word-by-word visual treatment. ASS can preserve supported style-level properties, but SubtitleGenerator does not encode its canvas word animation into ASS. Choose the export for the destination instead of assuming every subtitle file will reproduce the preview.

If a platform needs switchable closed captions, export a subtitle file and let that player control the appearance. If the active-word treatment is part of the creative edit, export the captioned video. You can keep both outputs when the publishing destination benefits from burned-in emphasis and an additional accessible caption track.

What are dynamic subtitles?

Dynamic subtitles are timed captions whose visible state changes as speech continues. They may highlight, scale, fill or isolate the active word instead of showing one unchanged line for the whole cue.

Are dynamic captions the same as animated captions?

Not always. A caption can animate once when a phrase enters without following individual words. Dynamic captions on this page use word timing to update the active state throughout the cue.

Can an SRT file keep word-by-word animation?

No. SRT carries text and cue time ranges, not fonts, colours or canvas animation. Export burned-in video when the exact dynamic treatment must stay visible.

Does this page upload or transcribe my video?

No. The timing bench uses built-in sample text. After you choose a treatment, the browser editor opens with that style selected. Transcription starts only after you choose a local video and continue through the existing product flow.
